To ensure durability for buildings and provide a healthy, comfortable and safe environment, buildings must be properly protected against internal and external factors. The most effective way to be protected against these internal and external factors is insulation. Waterproofing in buildings is carried out to prevent water from infiltrating into the building envelope and damaging the building elements and the structure, irrespective of its severity, condition and location.

It is clear that water, which is very hard to determine from where and how it infiltrates, causes damage to the structure and the people living in it. Waterproofing is applied for three different reasons. These are ground water, pressurized water and non-pressure waterproofing. Foundation walls are exposed to leaking water, temporary or permanent pressurized underground water after the completion of earth fill.

The difference of foundation insulations than other insulations is that it is very difficult or impossible to repair and fix an incorrect application. Therefore, foundation insulation applications should be planned very carefully and necessary sensitivity should be demonstrated in the application. Before applying the earth fill, the waterproofing layer should be protected against sharp objects in the soil and the mechanical effects by using thermal insulation boards and drainage boards during the filling process.
